Title: Studying at IPGKTI.
As I landed at the Senai Airport Johor Bahru, Johor on the 24th January 2011 my heart keep on pulsing and my mind imaging what would happen when I reached the Institut Perguruan Kampus Temenggong Ibrahim? I put myself in a tip top condition and went bravely for a taxi. I reached IPGKTI for about one hour because of the traffic stuffy here at Johor Bahru. Actually IPGKTI is located at Larkin District. When I reached at IPGKTI, the student representatives ask me to leave my bag and show me the way to Dewan Sri Temmenggong for registration. It took me about two hour to register everything from registering my name to tutor consultation. First person that I have known here is Mdm Sarala our charming tutor. After she finished checking my document and satisfy with it, I rush to pick my thing and wait for a bus as I being told to send me to Block H my new home aka my temporary hostel provided by the IPG.
I was given a schedule for a week long activity call “Minggu Pengurusan Pelajar “which I consider it too difficult because it look really pack and tight for me. Actually the bus which is supposed to send me to Block H just left and I wonder how could I reach at Block H on time because, in my schedule stated that at 2 O’clock I have to attend a welcoming seminar at DDKA which is far from Block H as I being told by senior student. Luckily I met a nice guy, Mr. Farris and apparently he is the deputy president of MPP (Student Representative Council) and he asks his fellow friend to send me by motorcycle. I thank them for their kindness and enter Block H for a mission to search H1.34 (Room No) and finally found it. Huh…. I was shocked when I enter the room whereby there are two beds only and one matters lying on the floor which I guess that it belong to me. After short chit chat with my new roommate, I went to the Dining Hall to have my lunch. I was alone and I follow anybody looks like new student to the dining hall. At the first sight I saw a face that it seem look familiar to me.. Finally I met my fellow Sabahan there and really grateful to meet them there.
We chat for about one hours and this really meaningful for me. We discuss a lot of things such as new life here at IPGKTI and introduce ourselves. First main issue arise from this conversation was how we can survive with this KPLI program? Which is famous with the busiest program that ever created by KPM (Malaysian Education Ministry). The KPLI program take one year to complete and the candidate teacher will be honored a Diploma In Education that is supposedly take three years to complete. There are rumors that we have to leave the hostel after the “Minggu Pengurusan Pelajar”. We begin to think and exchange opinion between each other to overcome this problem. My new friend for KPLI program suggested that after the “Minggu Pengurusan Pelajar” we have to search for a house outside the campus. For a time being we must finish this week long program organize by IPGKTI.
For a week long we are being exposed with many thing related to this training Institution and how to develop ourselves to become an outstanding teacher. A teacher is not for academic purpose only but they must bear other responsibility such as to prepare the future student to become a human being suit for the Philosophy of National Education. We were urged to involve in “GERKO” activity. GERKO is stand for “Curriculum Activity” which we are going to implement in school later after we graduated and posting. One of the best parts I have learnt during the”Minggu Pengurusan Pelajar” is JERIS or Physical, Emotion, Spiritual, Intellectual and Social. This so call JERIS need to be implemented when we teach the student later. We are being prepared from physical to mental to become new millennium teacher. For week long I did not have enough rest whereby the program is really tiring me up. What to do? I have to force myself because I really like the job. The management told me that they are so many applicant apply for the jobs but only few thousand are selected and we the luckiest person selected to enter the KPLI program. I feel grateful to God and I will do my very best to accomplish the KPM vision and goals.
After one week, we are granted a school leave for one week and everybody is happy going back to their home. I think I’m the happiest person in this planet because I can fly back to my hometown at Tamparuli Sabah to visit my wife and son there. After a week spent at my hometown, I went back to IPGKTI to continue my mission there. We are given a time table by our new elected KO (Ketua Opsyen) and thing change rapidly with the pack and tight schedule. We start our class at 7.45am till 7.00pm and this makes me a little bit worry weather I can finish this course or not. Many of fellow friends are also worried and created another issue. The newly created issue is time management. How could we manage our time accordingly if the time table is so pack and tight? The distant between our hostel to the classroom is far and this all news situation is really different from my previous experience studying at the University. Our Financial also hampered with the books, uniforms, foods, drinks that we paid almost daily in our live in IPGKTI. What to do? This is a nature of a new student.
Finally almost one month here at IPGKTI we manage to arrange our time wisely and able to follow all the schedule and task given to us. We manage to send our agreement document to student affair department on time and we are impatient for our allowance from the government. The trainee teacher must motivate himself or herself to become well-set in their mental and physical to become tip-top teacher. We were told that living and studying in this IPG is not difficult compare with the teacher teaching in the rural area whereby, they need to travel five to eight hours tiring journey to teach the student there. As a candidate teacher I must survive this easy task and become the best teacher. Many issues were created during this one month journey at IPGKTI and many of it tackles easily by us one by one. We were lucky when our application was approved by the student affair to stay one semester at Block H. I heard that my other friends staying at Block C did not do anything yet regarding to their placement inside the institution. Hopefully they will make their decision as soon as possible so that they are granted to stay inside. Staying inside will make you feel more confident, spent your money wisely and you can manage your time wisely.
This institution for teacher is really focusing to transform the teacher to become physical and mentally prepared to meet the Ministry Education goals and vision. Among the activity done here is to prepare the teacher to meet the challengeable scenario happening in our education arena. We as a teacher need to follow the rule created by the government and achieve our ex-prime minister Tun Matahir to become develop country in the 2020 in term of Education, Politic, Economy and Society. My ambition is to contribute to the society and becoming a teacher is the best way to show my contribution to the nation.
