Sabah Weightlifting C'ship begins today
The Sabah Weightlifting Championship 2011 kicks-off at the Dewan Belia in Tamparuli, today.
The championship is being held for the first time in Tamparuli and those living in and around the area are invited to witness the action.
The tournament, which is organised by Sabah Amateur Weightlifting Association (SWA), is the association's first and biggest event of the year.
SWA President, Philip Gisan said the tournament is scheduled to start at 8.30am and would be officiated by Assistant Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Jahid Jahim, who is also Tamparuli Assemblyman.
"A total of 26 athletes would be competing in the championship, of which five are women.
"Participation for this year's event is lower than the previous year, but this is only because of the higher criteria standards which the SWA has set.
"Those who are competing are considered among the best in the State.
They are the ones who have taken greater efforts to prepare for the event, which means the competition quality would be higher than previously," said Gisan.
He hoped that hosting the championship in Tamparuli would attract some of the local youths from the area to take up the sport of weightlifting.
Philip made these remarks when met after receiving Milo contribution at a sponsorship ceremony here, Monday. Nestle Sdn Bhd Kota Kinabalu Sponsorship and Sampling Manager, Jason Chong presented the sponsorship.
